Die snuit gaat vloeken met de rest van de wagen. De SL is één van de meest evenwichtigste wagens ooit naar mijn mening. Hij heeft zo'n zuivere lijn, en dan gaan ze die nu verneuken. Ofwel laat je hem zoals ie is, ofwel maak je een volledig nieuwe, maar met een SL moet je niet gaan knutselen, het past gewoon niet.

Hier kan ik mij volledig in vinden. Net zoals Ford dat deed met de Focus, vind ik het hier ook niet echt passen. Het is wel een pak goedkoper natuurlijk.

En waarom zou de topversie een andere benaming "SLC" krijgen?

Luidens AMS komt de facelift SL in Genève 2008, en de topversies zijn wel eventjes 't vermelden waard ...

• SL 63 AMG (was te verwachten)
• SLC (Black Series of HWA, zou duidelijk minder wegen ook) met +700pk sterke 6,2-liter V8

De Black Series

Mercedes SL Black Series Spied

A prototype for the Mercedes SL Black Series has been spotted on public roads around the Nürburgring, in preparation for some hot laps later this week. This is the most wicked SL ever conceived, with optimum performance its top priority.
Huge flared fenders are likely created with ultra-light carbon fibre, to reduce weight and to accommodate this car's enormous wheels and tires. The roof on this SL has been converted into a fixed coupe roof, also crafted in carbon fibre to lower the Black Series' center of gravity and further reduce weight. Exactly what engine mods have been employed here are uncertain, but you can be sure it's insanely powerful.
Our spies will be hot on the tail of the SL Black Series, so keep an eye out for more pics from the Ring.

Aan de foto's te zien vrees ik Targa ofzo...

Hoop toch op een open daksken, Targa is echt kut.
Tenzij dat camouflage is ook.

Hopelijk maken ze die koplampen niet te hoekig, want de achterlichten blijven hun tamelijk afgerond design behouden en anders vloekt dat.

Inderdaad egt vet breed , maar ik weet niet zeker of dit gigantisch brede machien de toekomstige SL zal worden, er word nl. gespeculeerd over die SLC die misschien onder die body verstopt zit, de SLC zou namelijk wel zo breed kunnen zijn...

Lelijk naar mijn bescheiden mening.

Ik heb de indruk dat ze er meer Lexus SC en minder sportwagen van willen maken. Of misschien is dat net de bedoeling, om meer contrast met de SLR-opvolger en SLC te bieden...

What’s this high-performance beast then?

To give the car its full likely name, this is the Mercedes-Benz SL AMG Black Series. AMG has a hierarchy, and top of the line are the Signature Series cars like the CLK DTM road car. One rung below that is the Black Series launched in 2006.

These are more powerful, lighter and track-biased cars - that’s why this car has been snapped at the Nurburgring. The first Merc to get the Black treatment was the SLK 55 AMG. Then there was the CLK 63 AMG, and now the ritzy SL gets the treatment. The car won't go on sale until at least spring 2008 and is likely to cost the wrong side of £150,000.

So what should I know about the car?

The biggest change is a switch to a fixed roof, like on its SLK smaller sibling. The big roadster’s party-piece has always been that folding roof, but the wealthy buyers who choose the Black will no longer be able to show off their roof acrobatics. There’s still a roof, but this time it’s likely to be made from carbonfibre. Not only does this lower the car’s weight, but it should lower the centre of gravity too.

AMG engineers have tried to disguise this switch but our spy pictures clearly show the new roof. Look closely at the shut lines suggesting a folding roof, and you'll notice they're not in the same place as the regular SL.

Mercedes-Benz SL AMG Black Series? What about the engine designation?

Ah, good question. We’re not sure yet. Mercedes’ bi-turbo V12 already produces big numbers, and can do even more as Brabus has proved. A twin-turbo version of Mercedes’s 6.2-litre V8 is also a possibility.

However, both the SLK and CLK Black Series cars have been naturally aspirated so forced induction might not fit with AMG’s mantra for these cars. Whether a naturally aspirated V8 engine with a small bhp increase will be enough for the prospective super-rich owners remains to be seen…

Whatever engine this car has, it'll be potent judging by the bodywork modifications. There are three massive air intakes in the front bumper, the bonnet appears to be vented and the gills behind the front wheelarches are also enlarged.

What about changes to the SL at the rear?

Our pictures show that the SL AMG Black will have significant changes to its bodywork. The wheelarches front and rear are massively blistered to incorporate fatter tyres and a wider front and rear tracks.

The rear bumper incorporates quad exhausts, a rear diffuser and what appears to be the cooling vent for a limited slip differential.

There is also a retractable rear wing to give more stability at high speed.

Anything else I should know?

In line with the whole SL range, the SL AMG Black will get the 2008 facelift with new headlights and various other nips and tucks.

Inside there’ll still be air-con, sat-nav and a decent stereo plus lots of Alcantara and carbonfibre. There will also be race-spec carbonfibre bucket seats.
