Car-export from Belgium to Austria

Hi @all!

I want to buy a car in Belgium and transport it (on it's own, if the car can take it) to Austria.

As far as I know I will need some sort of an "short term number plate" and also a car assurance.

Are there any special number plates for exporting a car or have I to get an normal number plate for the car (for 3 months).

For any help I'll be very grateful!

But why do you want to buy the car in Belgium and not in Austria (cars in Austria are cheaper to buy)

And why don't you buy a car in Germany? It's closer for you and there they have "short term number plates" like these:

It's a Jaguar.

And in Austria the sale of Jaguar is around 200 cars per year - so there is not a real market for used cars.

First I thougt I'll get the car from Germany, but there is one in Belgium I prefer.

It's just that I do not want to drive all the way from Austria to Belgium when I don't know who I get back.

Maybe my assurance man can help, I just havn't heard from him since my request.

I know, I got my BMW so from Germany to Austria

The main problem is the market for second-hand cars in Austria - it's just too small!

One can find a car here too, no problem - but you normaly find 2, maximal 3 cars to compare. When I look abroad (EU), I get more choice, particulary for the markets of Jaguar (no sale here in A, exept you accept 10.000 euro for an 15 year old one)

So I hope for the best - and buy in Germany if there's no other way.

There is also something like belgian export plates.

It is pretty complicated to get them though. User "Bralo20" knows the procedure.

There also is a place called Shenkira somewhere in Brussels, where you can get them in short term.

Isn't it possible that you contact your own insurance company and ask if they want to get a temporary insurance on your Austrian plates, but the Jaguar from Belgium?

In my opinion the best you can do is contact your insurance-man and ask him for a one or two day cover on your existing plates.

Take them of your car, get here by plane or by train, get to the car, put on the austrian plates (the ones you brought) and drive back home with it.

Shouldn't be to much of a financial disaster : you can get very reasonable prices on one-way airfare tickets and the extra insurance-chare will be a minimum.

I know - but I thought I'll have some choice ...

There is the possibility to get a number plate including assurance for a short term (3 to 21 days) in Austria.

But it cost about 200,00 to 250,00 EUR.

If there is nothing else, I'll take this option. It just my personal greed who thinks that I could spare me this amount of money (in Germany a number-plate incl. assurance cost for 30 days between 70 and 90 euro).

You can get in Belgium so called "Transit Plates". Those plates are red, have white caracters and are short term plates. The minimum period for those plates is one month, the maximum is one year.

However, to obtain those transit plates you must have a contact address in Belgium. Together with this person (or company) you must go to the DIV (Federal Government, Registration Service) to get a plate.

Required documents for transit plates:

- Registration form (pink A4 paper), correctly filled in with all the details of the car. It does need to carry the "705" vignet (issued by the customs) when it's a imported car to Belgium. Otherwise it must carry a pre printed sticker with all the necessary car details (or directly printed on the form), it will also carry a barcode then. When the car is previously registered in Belgium you will receive the same registration form but it will carry a similar sticker but it's issued and stamped by the technical department (GOCA) who are responsible for the obligated vehicle check.

The form looks like this:



- Personal Identification (passport or ID card) for the foreign buyer

- Personal Identification (passport or ID card) for the contact in Belgium

When the car will be registered to a company you need to have the statutes of the company.

- Insurance stamp for transit plates (mostly it's a small vignet with a yellow color isued by the insurance company) on the registration form.

- Your regular insurance (green card)

Transit plates are "free" to get. You must only pay the insurance (minimum term one month!). Registration fee or yearly taxes mustn't be paid for the transit plates.

When you have a contact in Belgium (the seller for example) you could get the short term plates (transit) yourself. When you don't have a contact in Belgium you could go to a company like Shenkira in Brussels (rather reliable company) who can arrange everything for you but then it will cost a certain amount of money for the work they are doing for you.

In the end it is easier AND cheaper to get the transit plate in Belgium than the plates in Austria.
